This page covers a trip with the Cincinnati Nature Center in January 2009 to the Amazon Jungle in Peru.
The trip started with an overnight stay in Lima, Peru. We then took an airplane ride over the Andes Mountains to Iquitos, which is the world's most inland port. Iquitos' population of 500,000 is accessible only through air or water on the Amazon River from Brazil via the Atlantic Ocean because there are no roads leading into the Northern Peruvian city.
Our group included 22 people who stayed on a boat entitled La Amatista, which was our vessel for the entire trip on the Amazon River. Our itinerary for the most part was bird watching either on La Amatista or excursions on a high speed skiff that took us into river tribuaries as well as hikes on terra firma.
Between our adventures with the Peruvian naturalist and boat crew to enjoying local food and drinks, bird and nature watching, and visiting with local people living off the river (Riberenos), the entire journey was an incredible experience.
